Tech Review: Logitech G Pro X2 Superstrike

As you’d expect, the world’s first computer mouse was a very basic affair. It was made from wood, featured a single button, and used a pair of wheels to track movement on the x and y axis.

This invention was credited to Douglas Engelbart in 1964, but it wouldn’t be until 1973 when mice were rolled out to the public alongside the first personal computers. 

Considering how basic of a task a mouse performs, you’d think they couldn’t have changed much in the 50 years or so that has passed, but you’d be wrong. From mechanical movements to laser, inertia and 3D mice, there’s no shortage of innovation in this space, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing. 

The G Pro X2 Superstrike is the latest mouse to come from Logitech, and it promises to be one of the most advanced of its kind. While it still performs the same task as Engelbart’s mouse did over 50 years ago, it’s an impressive little device that might not make you an E-Sports gamer out of the box, but will improve efficiency in almost every regard. 

But is it enough to justify the $339 RRP? I think so. 

What’s Included?

At that recommended retail price, the Superstrike ships with the mouse itself, plus a few extras to support its abilities.

The mouse itself weighs just 61 grams, which feels very light for a mouse, but upon further research, is about industry standard for these high-end gaming mice. It’s also quite large given its purpose, which I enjoyed.

You get what they call a “Light Speed Wireless Receiver” with a USB extender so you can keep it very close to the mouse on your desk. There’s also a set of grip tape panels, plus a replacement foot and a cleaning cloth.

The False Click

At its core, a mouse exists to click on things, and help a computer operator perform tasks. For a long time, this clicking action has been done with mechanical switches. Logitech has looked towards high-end keyboards and gaming controllers for inspiration here, which use magnetic-field controls instead. 

Through implementing these magnetic controls in place of a mechanical switch, Logitech has given users the ability to modify the actuation point of the click – which feels like witchcraft to use. 

The function works similarly to haptic touch panels in modern vehicles, where a short vibration is used in place of an actual click. This means that when the mouse is powered off, the buttons can still be pressed, but it won’t click at all. 

Speaking of the click, it’s no longer the onomatopoeia that the name suggests, instead it’s more of a dull bumping sound. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get used to the silent click, it feels cumbersome going back to a traditional mouse. 

Fake Click, Real Results

Customisation is at the forefront of the Superstrike’s offering, working in conjunction with Logitech’s G Hub software. In a similar sense to a performance car’s drive mode settings, almost every aspect of this mouse can be adjusted to a user’s preference. 

The headline is the actuation point of the click, which can drastically reduce click times from a traditional mouse. To test this, I put it up against my old mouse on a click-per-second testing website. Where I could only do 4.6 clicks per second on the old one, I managed to achieve 9.8 with the Superstrike, which is more than double the efficiency. 

This was achieved with the controversial “Rapid Trigger” feature, which has seen one Apex Legends player get banned for how quick it was. The user reportedly was later able to get the ban overruled by the company. 

It also was able to set a Guiness World Record at the hands of Yiğit “Yigox” Arslan, who clicked 760 times in a minute, averaging a huge 12 clicks per second. 

Other settings such as button assignments, DPI, polling rates, and x/y axis movement can be adjusted in the Gub Hub menus. 

A Racy Look

There isn’t too much you can do with a mouse and keyboard when it comes to racing games, as Logitech’s other offerings fill that niche. 

With its simple black and white colour scheme, and X2 displayed on each side, I guess you could compare it to a livery of a race car, but that’s where the automotive crossovers end. 

Historically, I’ve been more of a console gamer, using a controller over a mouse and keyboard, but in order to test the Superstrike properly, I jumped into Call of Duty Warzone with a few friends. 

Once I got the sensitivity settings dialled, I figured it was worth testing the rapid trigger function with semi-automatic weapons. As expected, the fire rate was very impressive, but my accuracy and recoil control left a lot to be desired. Though I managed to get a win in squads, I wasn’t contributing a whole lot, but can easily see how this mouse would improve a proficient PC gamer’s play. 

Everyday Use

Obviously this is a high-end gaming mouse, but I have used it for the last couple of weeks with my work, and I don’t think I can go back to my regular mouse. 

The feeling of the haptic click is much more satisfying than a traditional click, and the ability to customise the side button functions is really handy. 

In saying this, I wouldn’t recommend shelling out $339 for a high-end mouse for everyday use, but if you know what you’re doing on Counter Strike or Apex Legends, I can’t see how this Superstrike wouldn’t improve your game.
