While the outgoing F430 was largely based on the 360 Modena that preceded it, the Ferrari 458 Italia is a completely new car: engine, design, aerodynamics, handling, instrumentation and ergonomics are all new.
Described as a “massive leap forward” and a “genuine departure from the current range”, Ferrari says the new supercar is “a synthesis of style, creative flair, passion and cutting-edge technology.”
The two-seat 458 Italia has a compact aerodynamic shape which Ferrari says helps to reduce drag and improve downforce.
The front end features a bold grille housing small aero-elastic winglets “which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and cut drag.” Other small openings are scattered between the hood and headlights for added engine cooling.
The 458 rear end features a diffuser, California-style taillights, and three centre-mounted exhaust tips.
The new 4499cc V8 is the first Ferrari direct injection engine to be mid-rear mounted. It produces 540 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm. It’s also a pretty flexible engine, with 80 per cent of the 398lb ft of torque available from 3250rpm, with two-thirds on tap all the way through the rev range.
A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission has been specially engineered to match the power and torque curves of the new V8.
Ferrari estimates the 458 Italia will rocket from 0-100kph in under 3.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed in excess of 325kph.
The lightweight aluminum chassis means the 458 has a dry weight of 1380kg, and a 42/58 weight distribution. This is further backed up by a twin wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear set-up.
Dimensions are 4527mm in length, 1937mm in width, and 1213 in height. The wheelbase measures in at 2650mm.
The Ferrari 458 Italia features Formula 1 racing elements, including a reduction of internal engine friction which helps to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Thanks to this, the car has a reported fuel consumption rating of 13.7L/100 km while CO2 emissions are 320 g/km.
Elsewhere, the company added a racing-inspired steering wheel and dashboard which slope down and away from the driver “to minimise distractions”.
More information and details will be released closer to the 458’s official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
