Lady Wigram Trophy winner Earl Bamber threw down the challenge to his rivals for this afternoon’s New Zealand Grand Prix with an emphatic win in the Toyota racing Series preliminary.

Bamber grabbed the lead from pole and drove steadily away from the opposition, eventually winning by more than 5.5 seconds – an unheard of margin in a class where the winning margin has frequently been decided by tenths of seconds.

Second behind Bamber was defending NZ Grand Prix champion Daniel Gaunt who won Saturday’s TRS race.

Former A1GP driver Matt Halliday placed third, closing in on Gaunt in the race’s closing stages.

Next up was Formula Ford graduate Michael Burdett, ahead of TRS series leader, Andy Knight.

Ben Harford was sixth.

Nelson Hartley, who placed second on Saturday, dropped out of today’s race.
