The advertisement offers payment for people to have their car “wrapped” in sign writing in exchange for a large payment.

Anyone who replies to the advert is sent a cheque from the scammers with instructions to bank the cheque and immediately transfer the banked money to an off shore bank account, which pays to have their car “wrapped”.

The cheque later bounces leaving the victim, out of pocket and in most cases in debt to their bank for the total money transferred.

“We are appealing for anyone who has been a victim of this scam and has not been spoken to by Police to contact us as soon as possible” says Detective Matthew Kay of the Counties Manukau Financial Investigation Team.

“We also implore anyone who may have seen the ad and is thinking about contacting them to please avoid doing so. This is a tried and true scam, please don’t let yourself become the next victim”.

If you think you may have any information relating to the scam please call Detective Matthew Kay on 09 262 9110 or alternatively information can be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
