The production version of the Chevrolet Volt was shown off by General Motors chairman and CEO Rick Wagner on Tuesday, confident of the car’s performance.
The Volt will be able to travel 65km on a single charge from a home outlet, powerd by an electric drive unit that delivers the equivalent of 150hp and 370Nm of instant torque. After that, the batteries will be recharged by a small petrol engine that allows the car to travel hundreds more kilometres.
GM said the engine would be able to run on E85 ethanol, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol.
The Volt would have a driver-configurable liquid-crystal instrument display and touch-screen-style climate, information and entertainment controls, GM said.
It would also include standard Bluetooth wireless connectivity for a cellular phone and music streaming.
GM vice chairman Bob Lutz said the car will know a person’s normal route home, and if the driver veers off the route, it will calculate whether it needs to start the petrol engine to recharge the batteries to extend the range, and for how long the engine needs to run.
The Volt is due in US showrooms by November 2010.
