Defender has begun work on defining the route for the 2026 Dakar Rally, with the first of its dedicated reconnaissance vehicles now operating in Saudi Arabia.
While Defender is widely known as part of the Land Rover lineage, it now operates as a standalone brand under JLR’s restructured house of brands, alongside Discovery and Range Rover. That repositioning places Defender as JLR’s adventure and durability-focused marque — a role reflected in its expanding involvement in off-road motorsport.

As official car partner to the Dakar Rally, Defender is supplying a fleet of six modified Defender 110 models to support organisers with route planning across a four-year partnership running through to at least 2028. Two of those vehicles are already in use, helping officials finalise stages that will span several thousand kilometres across desert, dunes and rocky terrain.
The Dakar route is driven and validated in full by organisers well ahead of the event, with reconnaissance crews spending weeks navigating remote areas to ensure each competitive stage is safe, accurate and viable. To support that work, the Defender recce vehicles are based on P300-powered Defender 110s and fitted with a series of rally-specific upgrades.
These include a full roll cage, three-seat layout with four-point harnesses, reinforced underbody protection, rally-spec dampers and 18-inch wheels fitted with all-terrain tyres. Raised recovery points, a roof rack rated to 132kg and an auxiliary fuel tank extending range by up to 700km are also fitted.
Additional equipment includes a raised air intake with cyclonic pre-filter, tools and spares, sand ladders, emergency recovery gear, extra lighting, a fridge and a 40-litre water tank to support extended time in remote areas.

Once the route is confirmed — with stage details traditionally revealed to competitors on the morning of each day — the reconnaissance vehicles will also be used during the rally itself to open stages ahead of the field.
Beyond route planning, Defender’s Dakar partnership includes supplying additional vehicles to transport rally officials and media throughout the event. A fleet of 20 Defenders supported the 2025 Dakar Rally, which ran from Bisha to Shubaytah in Saudi Arabia.

From 2026, Defender will also move from a support role into competition, entering the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship in the Stock category as part of a three-year programme.
