Forester and Impreza models fitted with the new Subaru Boxer Diesel motor will arrive in New Zealand in December this year, following their launch at the Mondiale de l’Automobile (Paris Motor Show) next month.
The Forester 2.0D and Impreza 2.0D models will go on sale in Europe almost immediately with a new six speed manual gearbox. Legacy and Outback diesel models have been on sale in Europe since earlier this year.
Now mounted in the Forester and Impreza, the new and improved Boxer Diesel has adopted a closed-type DPF (diesel particulate filter) which, along with the six-speed manual gearbox, further improves the vehicles’ fuel economy and lowers emission outputs.
The Forester is a crossover SUV that features Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD (all-wheel-drive) system. Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), the maker of Subaru vehicles, claims the Forester 2.0D model boasts the lowest CO2 emission levels (167 g/km) in the compact SUV category.
The 5-door hatchback Impreza 2.0D features the Subaru Boxer Diesel, a six-speed manual transmission, and a finely tuned suspension, plus environmental features.
The Subaru Boxer Diesel engine is compact with a low weight, which are possible by the high rigidity offered by the Horizontally-Opposed engine design and through the use of an aluminium alloy cylinder block.
Another key feature is its quietness, made possible by the layout of the opposed pistons that cancel out inertia forces and create smooth rotations, which, as a result, reduce vibrations.
The two-litre quad cam diesel motor with common rail fuel injection and a variable nozzle turbo charger provides 110kWs at 3600rpm in the Impreza and 108kWs – because of the slightly more restricted airflow through the grille in the Forester at the same engine revs.
Both vehicles produce 350Nm of torque between 1800 and 2400rpm. The Forester diesel has a CO2 emission level of 167g/km while the Impreza emits only 152g/km.
