Holden has added a diesel-powered model to its mid-size Epica sedan range in New Zealand.
The diesel, available in CDX and CDXi forms, is $3500 dearer than its petrol-engined equivalents.
The 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder diesel engine is mated to a 6T40 six-speed automatic transmission with Active Select.
Fitted with an electronically-controlled variable turbocharger and second-generation common rail direct injection, the Epica’s diesel motor produces 110kW of power and 320Nm of peak torque.
The electronically controlled Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) provides fast response and more precise power control. It improves performance, reduces emissions and improves fuel economy.
Holden says the diesel engine can help the Epica to achieve fuel economy of 7.6 litres/100km.
Holden has also upgraded the 2.5-litre petrol model to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The petrol engine produces115kW and 237Nm and can return 9.3 litres/100km.
An Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and six airbags are now standard on all Epicas.
They’re added to ABS, Traction Control and Electronic Brake Force Distribution. Holden says international studies suggest that ESP can prevent more than 30 percent of single vehicle accidents.
With curtain airbags now fitted to the CDX, the Epica has six airbags standard across the range, providing head and upper body protection as well as additional chest and thorax protection for both the driver and front passenger.
Rear park assist has been introduced as standard on the Epica CDXi. Heated front seats are also now included with the CDXi.
Other additions to the 2009 Epica include tilt and telescopically-adjustable steering wheel, European-styled dual flip keys and unique alloy wheels on both the CDX and CDXi.
The Epica has been re-styled with a new front grille and rear fascia.
Holden has kept the price of the 2.5-litre petrol variant unchanged, at $33,490.
The Epica CDX diesel is $36,990; the CDXi petrol $37,490, and the CDXi diesel lists at $40,990.
