Scott Dixon has won a second Indycars title in the final race, the Peak 300, at Chicago this morning.
He was beaten in the final race by just 0.001 seconds by his main rival, Brazilian Helio Castroneves, who could have taken the overall crown if Dixon had come below eighth today.
“I still can’t believe it, what a race,” Dixon told ESPN straight afterwards.
“We were back and forward, we got shuffled back a little bit. Some of the guys I wouldn’t expect were racing super fast today.”
The result capped an incredible year for the Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver, who won the prestigious Indy 500 in May.
“My year in general, getting married to my beautiful wife Emma and having the season that we’ve had has been amazing.”
Dixon started second on the grid; Castronevas started 28th. Dixon slipped as low as 10th after a caution on lap 109 of the 200-lap race, while Castronevas was leading before the halfway point.
Dixon last won the series in 2003, when it was known as the Indy Racing League.
Last year he lost the title after running out of petrol on the last bend.
Dixon set a host of Indy racing records this season — he equalled the most race wins in a season of six and broke the record for the most laps led in a season.
