A prototype version of the classic Delorean, currently known as the DMCev, has been created by DeLorean Motor Company (Texas), which has no connection to the original DeLorean Motor Company, but in 1997 acquired assets and factory stock from the defunct manufacturer.
Having started as a parts supplier and restorer of the DMC-12, DeLorean Motor Company (Texas) began assembling ‘new’ DeLoreans in 2008.
The Houston-based company has collaborated with an electric car start-up company called Epic EV.
The DMCev replaces the DeLorean’s original V6 powerplant with an electric motor that produces the equivalent of about 260hp. A 100kph time of under five seconds is claimed, as well as a range of between 110-160kms.
The electric version was unveiled at DMC Texas’s recent open day and the company says it plans to “put an all-electric DMC-12 into production by 2013”.
