Electric Mini unveiled

BMW has released some information and photos of the battery-powered Mini E, set to debut next month at the LA Auto Show.

The Mini E will be powered by a 150kW (204hp) electric motor fed by a high-performance rechargeable lithium-ion battery, transferring its power to the front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox entirely free of emissions.

The battery technology will reportedly have a range of more than 240km.

BMW says the Mini E’s electric drive train produces a peak torque of 220Nm, delivering acceleration to 100kmh in 8.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 152kmh.

BMW will be leasing the 500 cars to commercial and private customers in California, New York and New Jersey starting early next year. They may eventually expand the program to Europe as well.
