Speaking with Britain’s Autocar, Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo said the roadster will be sold as a limited series, and come with its own name – something “emotional, romantic” such as “Italia or Fiorano”.
He also said the model would only be made available for prospective buyers in private viewings at the automaker’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy.
The new 599 is rumoured follow in the footsteps of the Ferrari 575 Superamerica and utilise a retractable hardtop.
The current 599 GTB Fiorano (pictured) comes with a 6.0-litre V12 with 612 bhp and 607 Nm of torque. it sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds. It is expected the new car will receive a 25hp boost to compensate for the extra weight of the convertible system.
The new open-top 599 will debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August.
Di Montezemolo also said Ferrari is open to the idea of producing a car with a V6 engine.
“An engine smaller than a V8? Why not?,” di Montezemolo said. “Turbocharging could be the answer, and with the V8, we’re confident that we can achieve impressive consumption and emissions through technology, innovation, and electronics.”
