In purely open-road running it can better that to 3.2 litres/100km (88.3mpg); in town, economy falls to 4.6 litres/100km (61.4mpg).

The Fiesta Econetic’s diesel engine gets modified calibration, and the package aimed at improving fuel economy includes aerodynamic rear air deflectors, a higher final drive ratio, suspension lowered by 10mm, optimised rolling resistance tyres (175/65R14), low friction oil, green shift indicator light, and an aerodynamic undershield for the powertrain.

The gear change indicator in the instrument panel debuts on the Econetic Fiesta. The system senses how the vehicle is being driven – measuring gradient, vehicle load and individual driving style – and signalling the optimum change point.

The Fiesta Econetic follows similar versions of the bigger Focus and Mondeo.

Ford will start selling the new Fiesta here this year but has yet to indicate which models will be in the range.
