Borrowing its wedge-shaped nose, trapezoidal grille and edgy headlights from the newly released Lancer sedan, the Concept-cX has looks intended to reinforce its sporty feel. Its unique medium blue duco is designed to create a more calming feel, and aluminium flakes in the paint give the car a distinctive metallic, translucent finish. The car has a T-shaped glass tailgate, and the front bumper is made from energy-absorbing materials, maximising pedestrian safety and allowing the bumper to return to its original shape after a light impact.
Among environmental technologies in the Concept-cX is the extensive use of interior trim materials made from Mitsubishi’s own Green Plastic – made from bamboo and other plant-based resins – part of an effort to stop global warming and slow the depletion of
oil reserves.
The cX is powered by Mitsubishi’s newly-developed 1.8-litre 4N13-type clean diesel engine, which reduces fuel consumption and emissions through a series of technologically advanced features. To improve fuel efficiency, the new clean diesel engines use a 200-MPa ultra-high-pressure common rail injection system and either solenoid (4N13-type engine) or piezo (4N14-type engine) injectors, as well as a fast ceramic glow plug system. The result is good emissions performance at a lower compression ratio than other diesel engines. The lower compression ratio also lowers the combustion pressure, which means that an aluminium cylinder block can be used, reducing engine weight.
The 1.8-litre 4N13-type engine uses a VG (Variable Geometry) turbocharger with a variable vane turbine, which provides optimal boost pressure for different driving conditions. A new catalyst system combines a DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), NTC (NOx Trap Catalyst) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to meet international emissions standards.
The clean diesel engine is paired with Mitsubishi’s Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST), providing the fuel economy of a manual transmission with the ease of an automatic. The TC-SST makes quick, smooth gear changes possible by placing odd and even gears on separate input shafts with electro-hydraulic control of the two multi-plate
wet clutches.
The Concept-cX uses Mitsubishi’s electronically controlled 4WD system combined with integrally managed ABS and Active Stability Control (ASC) systems. This driveline regulates four-wheel torque and braking force, creating a balance designed to extract maximum performance from the cX’s large-diameter tyres and ensure vehicle stability on wet or winding surfaces.
The cX’s compact size and high driving position provide the driver with a wide visual range, making the vehicle easy to manoeuvre in any situation. A split rear tailgate also makes for simple access into the luggage area, and allows for
easier loading. Mitsubishi says the Concept-cX “combines the best of both worlds. It has the practicality of an SUV, but is environmentally-friendly as well and builds on Mitsubishi’s proud reputation (for building) four-wheel drive vehicles.”
