
The flush, retractable door handle has become one of the visual signatures of the modern electric vehicle. But that design cue may be living on borrowed time.
China is moving to ban electronically actuated, hidden door handles from January 2027, citing safety concerns around doors that cannot be opened when power is lost following a crash. Draft regulations released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology would require all vehicles under 3.5 tonnes to be fitted with both interior and exterior door handles that include a mechanical emergency release.
The proposed rules target the Tesla-style handles that sit flush with the bodywork and rely on electric motors to present themselves. Regulators argue that purely electronic systems create a risk of occupants being trapped if battery power is cut or wiring is damaged in an accident.
Under the new framework, doors must be able to open manually even when all electronic systems have failed.
Tesla and others in the spotlight

The change places Tesla squarely in focus. All current Tesla models use electronically actuated exterior handles, a key part of the brand’s minimalist design language.
According to reporting cited by Bloomberg, at least 15 fatalities have been linked to crashes where electronic door releases failed to operate. There have also been documented cases of occupants being forced to smash windows to escape vehicles after door handles did not function following collisions or power loss.
While Tesla is the most visible example, it is far from alone. Other manufacturers, including BYD and Mercedes-Benz, have adopted similar flush or pop-out handle designs on a growing number of premium EVs.
Why regulators are stepping in
Chinese regulators point to several risk factors associated with electronic-only door mechanisms. These include complete power failure after a crash, delayed handle deployment in cold conditions, and confusion among occupants and first responders trying to locate manual releases inside the cabin.
While many EVs already include mechanical emergency releases, they are often hidden under trim panels or positioned low on doors, making them difficult to find or operate in stressful situations.
The new rules aim to remove that ambiguity by mandating clearly operable mechanical handles on both the inside and outside of the vehicle.
Global implications
As the world’s largest EV market, China’s regulatory decisions tend to ripple well beyond its borders. Any manufacturer wanting to continue selling vehicles there will need to rework door designs, potentially prompting a wider rethink of EV styling globally.
The move also reflects a broader shift in how regulators are approaching EV-specific design features, balancing futuristic aesthetics against real-world safety performance.
Similar concerns are now being examined elsewhere. In the United States, federal road safety authorities have launched investigations into emergency door-opening systems on Tesla Model 3 vehicles following owner complaints about being unable to exit cars during power failures.
For now, the flush door handle remains a hallmark of EV design. But if China’s proposals are adopted as expected, the industry may be heading back toward something far more familiar. A handle you can grab, pull, and trust to work when everything else has stopped.
