The car won the award in the prestigious annual competition of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) and WesBank.

2012 has already turned out to be an award winning year for the all-new Elantra. In January, at the Detroit Motor Show, the Elantra was also announced as the North American Car of the Year; and it also won the overall prize in the Canadian Car of the Year competition in February.

The all-new Elantra – Hyundai’s big small car with its exciting and eye-catching “fluidic sculpture” styling with a driving experience to match – was announced as the winner at the SAGMJ and WesBank’s Car of the Year event.

Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille and detailed swept-back headlights give the Elantra a compact athletic face.

The Hyundai Elantra is also a fond favourite here in New Zealand, selected as one of twelve cars shortlisted for the 2011 New Zealand Car of the Year Award.

It is the first time that a Korean automaker has been awarded the South African Car of the Year prize. In 2011 Hyundai had two finalists, the ix35 and i45, whilst the i20 was a finalist in the 2010.
