The accolade is a measure of how far Korean cars have come in the past few years, moving away from cheap but ordinary to stylish and world class.

It’s the third major award for the Korean outfit in the past few months.

Influential British motoring magazine, Autocar, named the Hyundai/Kia group the 2008 manufacturer of the year.

And earlier this month, America’s Consumer Reports named the Genesis as its pick for upmarket sedan, praising its affordability comparied with its competitors. American prices start around $US33,0000 for the V6.

Hyundai’s Genesis is a rear-wheel drive sedan with a choice of V6 or V8 engines and is designed to compete against Cadillac and Lexus.

As well as presenting the North American COTY to the Genesis, the journalists also voted the new Ford F-150 the 2009 North American Truck of the Year.
