The achievement came on the back of record March and first quarter sales for Kia in the US, and in New Zealand where Kia sales in the first quarter were also a record, being 14% ahead of the same period last year.

Kia number 3,000,000 in the US was a Sorento crossover, produced at the company’s new $1.3 billion factory in Georgia. It is the first production facility to be established in the US by Kia Motors.

The Georgia plant occupies a 2,200-acre site south-west of Atlanta and has been designed to produce up to 300,000 vehicles per year and will add another model to its line by the end of 2010. Among the features of the plant are a giant 5,400-tonne stamping press and a production line consisting of 244 robots welders that work 24 hours a day.
