MX-5 enthusiasts from all over the world will descend on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, near Monterey in California, from 5-7 September 2014. The goal is to exceed the previous record of 1,600 cars set in Japan in 2009.

Nelson resident Rick Weldon and his Miatas at Mazda Raceway team have been approached to organise the event. As well as a long-time Mazda enthusiast, racer and team manager, Weldon serves on the board for the emerging NZ Central Motorsport & Adventure Park to be constructed in the region.

There will be something for all Mazda fans at the celebration, including high performance track days, displays of historic and significant MX-5s, a racing MX-5-only exhibition race, and discussion groups featuring everyone from the original team that conceived the car back in the late 80’s to Mazda North America’s current chief of design.

Meanwhile, Mazda will be conducting the long-awaited global debut of the next generation 2016 model, with concurrent world unveilings in Barcelona, Japan and at this event in Monterey.
