The Mercedes-Benz G models will be available in New Zealand as a five-seat longwheelbase G 350 BlueTEC turbo diesel or G 55 AMG petrol model.

The 2987cc V6 diesel engine in the G 350 BlueTEC develops 155kW at 3400rpm and has a torque of 540Nm between 1600 and 2400rpm. Fuel use is reported at 11.2L/100km (combined cycle), and carbon emissions are rated at 295g/km.

The diesel is mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which will push all four wheels from 0 to 100kmh in 9.1 seconds. Maximum speed is 175kmh.

The G 55 AMG is powered by a 5439cc V8 supercharged engine developing 373kW with a peak torque of 700Nm. Fuel use is 15.9L/100km and emissions are 372g/100km.

With a five-speed automatic engine, the G 55 will reach 100kmh in 5.5 seconds, maxxing out at 210kmh.

The standard specification includes the electronically controlled traction system 4ETS, the Electronic Stability Program ESP, and three differential locks selectable at the push of a button, alongside the permanent all-wheel drive with off-road ratio.

Inside you’ll find leather seats, sat nav, DVD player and reversing camera. The higher spec’d G55 gets heating/cooling for the front seats, a TV tuner, and a firmer ride.

Outside, little has changed on the boxy exterior since the first1972 design, originally developed for the German army. Special metallic paint reduces scratches thanks to its ceramic elements, a rubber strip helps minimise supermarket trolley dents, and there is now a rear-mounted spare wheel.

Both models have dual front airbags, and a pair of side-curtain airbags, as standard.
