The first rear-wheel drive S400 hybrid rolled off the assembly line in Germany at the end of June.
For the first time in a production vehicle, the S400 a lithium-ion battery powering the 15kW (20hp) electric motor, paired with a 205kW (279hp) 3.5 V6 petrol engine.
Mercedes says the maximum 385Nm of torque provide a 7.2 second 0-100kph time, and a 250kph top speed.
The hybrid powertrain reportedly brings fuel consumption down to as low as 7.9 liters per 100km, or roughly 30mpg. CO2 emissions are rated at 186g per km.
Some of the features on the car include start/stop, a recoverable kinetic energy system, seats lined with wool, and wood trim. Adaptive highbeams, lane assist, night view assist, the Splitview monitor, and the new COMAND system are expected for this vehicle.
The new exterior styling on the 2010 S-Class includes revised front and rear fascias, new LED daytime running lights and tail lights and reshaped exterior mirrors, while the twin tailpipes have been integrated into the rear apron. Inside, there’s a new steering wheel with standard paddle shifters.
