The design of the new Mercedes SLK roadster references the SLS AMG and E-Class, with its more upright grill with three-point star logo.
The traditional long bonnet and stubby tail remain, enhanced with LED lights and extra flair on the vents. The bonnet and wings are now made of aluminium to save weight.
The highlight, of course, is the Magic Sky Control roof, which sees the panoramic glass changing from light to dark, at the touch of a button.
The SLK350 comes with a new range-topping 3.5-litre V6 pumping out 302hp (225kW) and powering the car from 0 to 100 ks in 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 250kmh. A 1.8-litre version will accompany the SLK250.
Later in the car’s life the SLK will get its first diesel engine, the 201hp 2.4-litre CDI, and an AMG model with a twin-turbo version of the new petrol V6.
All cars feature direct injection and stop start, helping to improve the efficiency by a claimed 25%.
Mercedes-Benz promises a better ride on the new SLK thanks to firmer springs and dampers on the suspension and torque vectoring brakes.
Safety kit includes Mercedes’ Pre-safe brake and attention assist, while buyers will also be able to opt for an intelligent light system, which gives five headlight modes which change depending on driving conditions, and speed limit assist, which uses a camera to read road signs and display the speed limit on the dash.
New technology on the SLK includes an Airguide windstop system – a new invention to help control air flow and noise in the cabin area when the top is down; and Airscarf, which blows hot air around your neck from vents in the seat.
The SLK will go on sale in Europe later this month.
