Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has unveiled the new Outlander Sport HEV, marking the company’s first hybrid electric vehicle for the New Zealand market as it prepares for a major expansion of its electrified line-up.

The compact SUV was shown to Mitsubishi dealers and staff during the company’s Diamond Dealer awards on May 8, ahead of its scheduled local arrival in the third quarter of 2026.

Known internationally as the Mitsubishi Xforce, the model has already enjoyed strong sales overseas, with more than 77,000 units sold globally since launching in Indonesia in 2023 across markets including Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The model is made in Indonesia, and will be the first Indonesian-built car available in New Zealand.

For New Zealand, the Outlander Sport arrives exclusively in hybrid electric vehicle form, giving Mitsubishi a new electrified option positioned between traditional petrol models and plug-in hybrids.

Tony Johnston, MMNZ Chief Operating Officer,  says the new model reflects changing attitudes among Kiwi buyers.

“We’re seeing more and more New Zealanders looking at electrified options, but not everyone is ready to make the jump to plug-in or fully electric vehicles,” said Johnston.

“Outlander Sport HEV gives customers a highly efficient, practical SUV that delivers the benefits of electrification in a way that fits seamlessly into everyday life.”

Unlike the plug-in hybrid system used in the Outlander PHEV, the new Outlander Sport HEV does not require external charging. Instead, it combines a 1.6-litre MIVEC petrol engine with Mitsubishi’s latest hybrid system, automatically switching between EV, hybrid and engine drive modes depending on driving conditions.

The system also uses regenerative braking and intelligent energy management to maximise efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Designed with everyday practicality in mind, the Outlander Sport HEV features 212mm of ground clearance and selectable drive modes including Normal, Wet, Gravel and Mud, giving it the versatility expected from a Mitsubishi SUV.

The new model adopts the company’s “Silky & Solid” design philosophy, blending compact SUV proportions with a more premium appearance. Buyers will be able to choose from a range of monotone finishes, including Volt Yellow and Graphite Grey, while the flagship VRX variant also gains two-tone paint options with a contrasting black roof.

Inside, the cabin focuses heavily on technology and comfort. A 12.3-inch infotainment display with wireless smartphone connectivity is paired with a digital driver display showing energy flow and regeneration data. A panoramic glass roof comes standard across the range, while additional sound insulation and available Yamaha-tuned premium audio aim to create a quieter, more refined cabin experience.

Safety equipment will also be extensive, with adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and leading car departure notification fitted as standard. VRX models add a multi-around view monitor and moving object detection.

The Outlander Sport HEV is expected to be the first of several key Mitsubishi launches in 2026, with the brand also preparing to introduce a fully electric battery EV and another yet-to-be-revealed model.

“These new models will open the door to entirely new segments for Mitsubishi in New Zealand,” said Johnston.

“It’s about making sure we’re offering the right vehicles for where the market is heading, while continuing to build on the strengths that have made us such a popular and reliable choice for Kiwi drivers.”

Johnston also confirmed the existing Mitsubishi ASX will remain part of the local range alongside the new model.

“ASX continues to play a key role in our line-up and remains a very popular option for customers. Outlander Sport sits alongside it, giving buyers another choice within the compact SUV segment.”

Pricing and final specifications for the Outlander Sport HEV will be announced closer to launch. Before then, the only example currently in New Zealand will be displayed publicly at Fieldays 2026 from June 10–13 at Site J42–J46.
