Though Nissan has said little about the planned replacement for the 200SX which is popular with aftermarket tuner car fans and drift racers, indications of what the car might have been like were provided by the Foria coupe concept of 2005 and the roadster Urge compact unveiled in 2006 (both pictured at right).

Axing the 200SX programme is part of a raft of cutbacks that follow the company’s announced financial difficulties, Nissan says it will also cut jobs worldwide.

The reports say Nissan has suspended but not abandoned plans to build a saloon version of the GT-R to challenge cars like the new Porsche Panamera and forthcoming Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide.

Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, like his counterparts at America’s big three carmakers, is refocusing Nissan on developing medium and small cars and alternative-fuel vehicles.

A Nissan hybrid to rival Toyota’s Prius and Honda’s Civic and Insight petrol/electric cars is expected to arrive in 2010.
