Nissan confirms Mega GT-R

After weeks of coy manoeuvring while GT-R enthusiast web and blog sites chronicled the existence of the Spec V, Nissan has said overnight that the car goes on sale next month through seven selected dealers in Japan.

You won’t see it here as an official Nissan New Zealand model, but expect more than one to turn up as used or grey imports from Japan where it sells for 15.7 million Yen.

Nissan says the Spec V is targeted at enthusiast drivers who want race car-level performance in a street-legal vehicle.

It says the modifications incorporated in the Spec V take the GT-R to an entirely new level of “oneness between man and machine.”

It has unique body, interior and performance equipment and modifications, including a carbon fibre rear spoiler, a carbon fibre grille and carbon fibre brake ducts. It is sold exclusively in Ultimate Black Opal (RP) body colour.

Unlike the regular GT-R, the Spec V is strictly a two-seater with special Recaro carbon fibre bucket seats, and there are carbon fibre insets on the rear centre storage box and instrument panel.

Performance is enhanced by a new high gear boost control device, which momentarily increases the twin turbochargers’ boost for greater torque at intermediate to high speed.

Rather quaintly, Nissan Japan says that boost provides “a more powerful feeling of acceleration, while also allowing the engine to operate at a lower speed for improved fuel economy.”

Other modifications include a titanium-coated exhaust system and powerful carbon-ceramic brakes.

The Spec V runs on lightweight, racing-style forged aluminium wheels developed specially for the model. Interestingly, Nissan Motorsports International (Nismo) has been selling them since September, 2008.

Nissan will sell the car at seven dealer outlets staffed by mechanics with special GT-R Spec V training and who are knowledgeable of racing circuit driving.

The dealers are: Ibaraki Nissan Sales Co Ltd, Mito Sennami Outlet; Nissan Prince Tokyo Sales Co Ltd, Kamedo Outlet, Nissan Prince Nagoya Sales Co Ltd, Fukiage Outlet; Nissan Prince Osaka Sales Co Ltd, Horie Kawaguchi Outlet; Nissan Prince Hyogo Sales Co Ltd, Nada Outlet; Nissan Prince Kagawa Sales Co Ltd, Takamatsu Outlet, and Yamaguchi Nissan Sales Co Ltd, Ogori Interchange Outlet.
