That’s what a diesel-engined Peugeot 308 has achieved in a crossing of South Africa.

The 308 HDi managed 1689.7km from a tank of diesel, averaging 3.4 litres/100km.

The car completed its coast to coast challenge by arriving in Umhlanga after setting off from the small town of Kleinzee on the Northern Cape coast.

Peugeot says it made the journey to showcase the car’s fuel efficiency and highlight the need for motorists to drive fuel-efficiently to reduce their impact on the environment.

“We knew the 308 HDi was incredibly light on fuel, but we were pleasantly surprised when we pulled up near Durban on the same tank of fuel that it had set off with on the other side of South Africa,” says Peugeot South Africa executive, Mike Wilson

“The success demonstrates that when technology designed with the environment in mind is allied to a fuel efficient driving style, the increased distance between refuelling stops can be startling.”

The South African achievement is on top of Peugeot’s recent Guinness World Record for fuel efficiency in Australia, where a 308 diesel averaged 1919 kilometres per tank on a drive around the country.
