European sources are suggesting it will be much more of a change than the second generation car, and may take cues from the Ragster convertible concept shown at the 2005 Detroit motor show.
The Ragster (pictured) took its name from a combination of ragtop and speedster, the latter because of its low-slung chopped-top bodywork that resembled the Porsche 356 Speedster.
It’s rumoured too that Volkswagen might take a dollar each way with a mild change to the current car and a more radical separate Beetle model.
VW designers lowered the 2005 Ragster show car’s windscreen pillar around 90mm, helping make the car 103mm lower than the standard New Beetle, and fitted it with 19-inch alloy wheels.
