School is back (and so is the traffic)

“When school is out traffic volumes traditionally drop off on most roads, and with the kids heading back to class this week the roads will be busier.

“It’s also important for drivers to remember that there will be more pedestrians and cyclists about, many of them young. We’re asking drivers to be especially careful and watch their speeds around schools. We know everyone’s keen to stay in holiday mode while the sun shines, but on the roads you need to stay vigilant all the time.”

The Transport Agency has also produced data which shows the increase in expected journey times. The extra travel time is most noticeable during the morning peak, particularly on SH1 heading into the city.

“Because it’s also a New Year people’s traffic patterns change, they might try a new route or leave home for work a bit later, and that can sometimes mean traffic is slightly worse to begin with. So don’t be surprised if there’s heavy traffic and factor in extra travel time while everyone is settling back into their new routine.”
