Top Gear magazine named the VW coupe its 2008 Car of the Year.
VW New Zealand general manager, Dean Sheed, says prices and final specification of NZ market cars are yet to be decided, but there will be a choice of two petrol engines, a twincharger and the Golf GTi unit.
The TSI twincharger uses both a supercharger and turbocharger to produce 118kW of power and 240Nm of peak torque. It drives the front wheels through a seven-speed twin clutch automated manual (DSG) gearbox.
VW quotes a 0-100km/h time of eight seconds, combined fuel economy of 6.4 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 148 grams/km.
The turbocharged 147kW Golf GTi engine is mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox in the Scirocco. VW says the car will hit 100km/h in 7.1 seconds and return fuel economy of 7.6 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 179 grams/km.
Sciroccos have six airbags – front side and curtain – and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), anti-lock ABS braking, and active front head restraints.
