A total of 3979 new cars were sold in New Zealand in May, reflecting a stronger level of buyer enquiry during the month.

Motor Trade Association (MTA) communications manager, Andy Cuming, said that the good news for the new car industry was also matched by a return to stronger sales for used imported cars.

“A total of 5211 used imported cars were sold in the month which meant that May was the second highest month so far this year,” he said.

“This was 9.5 percent up on the previous month.”

Cuming says while sales so far this year continue to run below the same period in 2008, the motor industry is feeling more confident that sales have turned a corner.

“We reported last month that April really was a low point.

“There are now signs that the more strength is returning to the market, bolstered by the range of attractive model line-ups available in the new car sector, and well-priced more up-to-date models available as used imports.”
