The Mazda RX-8 Spirit R is based on the RX-8 Type RS (with a six-speed manual transmission) and Type E (with a six-speed automatic gearbox). Just 1000 examples will be produced for the Japanese market, before the RX-8 says goodbye in June 2012.

Special equipment includes the sport suspension and larger brakes (with red calipers), bronze alloy wheels, new front headlights and fog lights with black bezel rear combination lights, an exclusive SPIRIT R badge, a piano-black transmission tunnel trim, and leather Recaro sports seats with red stitching.

Mazda promises the end of the RX-8 doesn’t mean the end of rotary engine development. Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda’s Representative Director, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, said, “Although RX-8 production is ending, the rotary engine will always represent the spirit of Mazda and Mazda remains committed to its ongoing development.”
