The event doubles as a round of the NZ SuperTourer’s Hankook Super Series and will be known as the Rush Security Waikato 250 & Motorcup.

The two-day event will be headlined by the Toyota Racing Series who compete for the NZ Motor Cup – one of the most prestigious trophies in NZ motorsport featuring some of the world’s greatest young drivers. The other headline class, the NZ SuperTourers will commence the first event of their four round sprint championship and promises close racing among some of NZ and Australia’s top drivers.

A host of great support classes will also be in action over the weekend including Porches’, Formula First, Supermini, Ssangyong Racing Series, Wil Sport Hyosung Cup (Motorbikes) and Sportscars. BNT NZ SuperTourers Sales & Marketing Manager Mike Marsden says it is great for the series to be aligned with the Motorcup and the Toyota Racing Series (TRS).

“It’s great to be racing alongside a high profile NZ Motor racing series in TRS. This is New Zealand’s premier touring car series and the premier open wheeler series at the same venue which will provide a welcome spectacle for race fans.”

NZIGP Chairman Nigel Smith says it is set to be a fantastic event with something to appeal to any motorsport fan.

“Whether you love fast touring cars, or a single-seater purist with the exciting Toyota Racing Series cars, there will be a lot on show. Hampton Downs also allows the spectators to get literally only metres from the track and cars racing past with a great number of viewing points close to each other.”

“The Toyota Racing Series attracts young drivers from all around the world, who are the future stars of single seater racing, some of whom will undoubtedly make it all the way to F1.”

Marsden commented that the NZ SuperTourer series is looking to expand and grow its field in the immediate future. “NZ SuperTourers aspires to achieve what TRS has and similarly cement ourselves in the NZ Motorsport landscape while building our reputation globally as a platform for aspiring touring car drivers to further themselves in preparation for the step up into the likes of the V8 Supercar series.” “We have been working actively on this so you can expect to see a few new international drivers joining the field in the very near future.”

With the first three endurance rounds of the NZ SuperTourer series now over, a host of kiwi drivers will battle for the overall title over the final four rounds.

With the co-drivers now taken out of the mix, Simon Evans leads the series with 1057 points, with Richard Moore close behind in second place on 951. Rising star Andre Heimgartner rounds out the top three on 931 points.
