Meaning “Wolf” in Inuit, the Amarok design is based on the new Volkswagen desing DNA, also seen on the latest Golf, Transporter, and Multivan.

With the Amarok, Volkswagen says it has “taken the ute and reinterpreted it for today’s market”. The result is “a highly capable, safe and good looking ute that has levels of safety and comfort you’d expect in a passenger vehicle”.

The high performance Twin Turbo TDI 120kW Amarok produces 400Nm of torque, whereas the 90kW TDI delivers 340Nm of pulling power. All models offer diesel engines with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The optional 4Motion model gives shiftable all-wheel drive with high/ low gear ratio for almost every type of terrain; whereas the Amarok is equipped with rear wheel drive as standard.

The Amarok has a reported fuel consumption from 7.3 litres per 100 km.

The Amarok can handle a load of up to 1142 kg and a trailer weight of 2800kg. It also has an extra large loading deck that can handle 2.52m² and a through-loading width of 1222mm (the widest in its class).

Standard safety features include multiple airbags, and on Highline models also includes head/thorax airbags which are still rare in the ute segment. Basic equipment includes three-point belts as well as height-adjustable head restraints. Amarok also provides both on road and off-road ABS and ESP.

Inside is a variable folding rear bench, cruise control (in the Highline), multi-function display (MFD), air-con system, CD-radio system with four loudspeakers mounted in the front. Also standard in the Amarok is a 12v power outlet with an additional 2 power outlets available in the Highline.

The exterior features a body coloured front bumper, 16” steel wheels and a black grained rear bumper with integrated step. The top of the line Amarok Highline sets itself apart by its distinctive flared wheel arches, 17” aluminium wheels, chrome accents for the front and rear bumper and the outside mirrors and dark tinted privacy glass in the rear .
