Volkswagon says the name means “wolf” in Inuit, and will be launched in New Zealand in late 2010.
The new Amarok from Volkswagon Commercial Vehicles follows the Caddy, Transporter and Crafter, and is designed to enter the global ute market currently dominated by Japanese brands.
It will be launched as a double-cab ute with four-wheel-drive, followed later by a single cab version.
Volkswagon says it will feature efficient common rail diesel injection engines.
Dean Sheed, Volkswagen General Manager for New Zealand says, “Being able to offer customers an option outside of the current Asian based Utes will be ground-breaking territory for our brand. Backed by a Ute heritage that dates back nearly three decades, along with Volkswagen’s proven commitment to safety, performance, TDI diesel technology and environmental standards, we are extremely confident of upcoming success for the Amarok across the marketplace.
“We all know how much Kiwi’s love their Ute’s, whether it be their undeniable practicality as a work partner, or the ability to cart around the family on the weekend with the bikes and toys loaded in the back.
“The new Amarok is sure to hit the ground running in New Zealand with what should be class leading fuel consumption, emission standards, engine performance and load carrying capabilities, not to mention rugged good looks. We are currently evaluating the new Amarok for an introduction to this market, which would be around late 2010.”
The Amarok debuted at the 2008 IAA Show in Germany, and will be built at Volkswagon’s plant in Argentina.
