Volvo chases Green COTY award

Say Volvo and the first thing that comes to mind is safety.

But now that may as well also be green, with five of the Swedish carmaker’s models in the running to be World Green Car of the Year 2009.

Award organisers will announce the Green Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show on April 9.

The Volvos nominated for the award are the C30, S40 and V50 DRIVe models and the V70 2.5FT and S80 2.5 FT.

Volvo’s DRIVe cars (pictured) are diesel variants of the C30, S40 and V50 models with fuel consumption of 4.4 litres/100km (C30) or 4.5 litres/100km (S40 and V50). The cars’ corresponding CO2 figures are 115 and 118 grams/km.

The Volvo V70 2.5FT and S80 2.5FT run a 200-horsepower five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged Flexifuel (bioethanol) engine.
