The two-seater, on display at the Detroit motor show, runs a mid-mounted 132kW/350Nm common rail diesel engine in a lightweight chassis/body.
VW says it will hit 100km/h in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 225km/h. Gearbox is a six-speed twin-clutch DSG automated manual, and the car has a near-perfect 45/55 front/rear weight distribution.
And VW insists that its environmental credentials are impeccable, quoting CO2 emissions of 113 grams/km and the potential to return fuel consumption of 4.35 litres/100km (65mpg) on the combined cycle.
Drivers can engage Eco mode to activate an automatic Stop-Start system and braking energy regeneration to further improve fuel economy.
The concept has an orange retractable fabric roof, unique multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, high-intensity LED tail-light clusters above an aerodynamic diffuser and twin tailpipes.
It’s 3990mm long, 1260mm high and 1745mm wide – shorter than a Golf yet almost as wide. It has 112 litres of load space under the bonnet and an additional 70 litres in a rear boot.
Though VW says the Concept BlueSport is a design study and it has no immediate plans to build it, we’ll wait and see.
