Toyota New Zealand has opened the pre-order books for the upcoming, all-electric Hilux BEV.

According to the brand, it will be available for “New Zealand customers to pre-order towards the end of May.”

Speaking on the impending arrival of the battery-powered ute, Andrew Davis, Toyota New Zealand Chief Strategic Officer, explained how it forms an integral part of the electric strategy.

“Offering both Kiwi businesses and private buyers the choice of a Hilux with zero tailpipe emissions is a crucial step forward in providing consumers the right powertrain for the right application, at the right time,” Andrew Davis says.

“This is an exciting time for Toyota; bringing in a fully electrified version of the much-loved Hilux finally gives businesses and fleets the option of low-emission motoring, supported by Toyota’s genuine parts and accessories programme, and our unrivalled servicing network.”

“Critically, we have been able to secure both the wellside and Cab Chassis variant of the Battery Electric Hilux giving customers the flexibility to customise, as they would any other Hilux powertrain in our range, to suit their needs.”

“Private buyers looking to make the switch to an electric ute will now have the backing and confidence of Toyota build quality, service options and Toyota Genuine Accessories.”

The Hilux BEV in question is powered by a 52.2kWh battery, providing up to 315km (NEDC) of range in wellside variants.

It will be offered in two grades locally — SR and SR5.

Toyota New Zealand notes the driving range of the cab chassis model is limited to 245km (NEDC).

A dual-motor all-wheel drive system is standard, with peak power sitting at 144kW. A peak torque figure hasn’t been provided.

The Hilux BEV is rated to tow up to 2,000kg braked, or 750kg unbraked.

It also features a bespoke suspension configuration, designed around the large battery and electric motors.

This consists of beefed-up MacPherson strut front suspension and a De-dion rear leaf spring setup.

Pricing is expected to be announced before the end of May.
