How to Make Your Car Easier to Find in a Busy Car Park?
Words: Gwen Li
We have all had that moment. You walk out of a shopping centre, look across a packed car park and realise you cannot remember where you left your car.
It is especially easy to lose track in large shopping centres, airports, event venues or unfamiliar multistorey car parks. The good news is that a few simple habits can make finding your car much easier.
Take a Photo Before You Leave
One of the simplest tricks is to take a quick photo as soon as you park.
Rather than taking a photo of the car itself, capture something that identifies the location. This could be a row number, coloured pillar, shop entrance, lift, stairwell or nearby sign.
In a multistorey car park, make sure you also note the level. A photo takes only a few seconds and saves you from trying to remember whether you parked on Level 2 or Level 3 an hour later.
Save Your Parking Location
Your phone can make it much easier to keep track of where you left your car.
If your phone is connected to your car via Bluetooth, compatible phones and map apps may recognise when the Bluetooth connection ends after you park and use this to remember your recently parked location. When it is time to head back, you can check your phone for the saved location instead of trying to remember which part of the car park you were in.
You can also manually drop a pin or save your parking location when parking somewhere large or unfamiliar.
Keep in mind that location services can be less accurate inside covered or multistorey car parks, so it is still worth noting the level, row or section.
Pay Attention to Your Surroundings
Before walking away, take a few seconds to look around.
Instead of thinking, “I parked near the entrance”, pick one or two specific things to remember. Perhaps you are opposite a trolley bay, beside a pedestrian crossing or near a particular set of lifts.
It can also help to look back at your car once you have walked a short distance. Seeing the area from the direction you will return can make it easier to recognise later.
Use the Car Park Markers
Large car parks often use numbers, letters, colours or zones to help people navigate. They are much easier to remember than trying to identify your car among several rows of similar vehicles.
If the car park says you are in Level 3, Section B, make a quick note or take a photo. This is particularly helpful when different floors have almost identical layouts.
Use Your Car’s Features
If you know you are in the right area but still cannot spot your car, your key fob may help you locate it by flashing the lights or unlocking the doors.
Some newer vehicles also offer connected apps or navigation features that can show the last parked location or allow you to activate certain functions remotely.
These features are useful for narrowing down the final few metres, but they work best alongside remembering the general area where you parked.
Make It Part of Your Parking Routine
Finding your car does not need to turn into an unexpected walk around the entire car park.
Before you leave it, take a photo, note the section or save the location on your phone. It only takes a few seconds, but it can make returning to your car much easier, particularly somewhere busy or unfamiliar.
