Is Low Mileage Always Better When Buying Used?
Words: Gwen Li
When shopping for a used car, it is easy to assume that fewer kilometres on the odometer means you are getting a better vehicle.
A car with 60,000 km might seem like the obvious choice over one with 120,000 km. But mileage only tells part of the story.
How a vehicle has been driven, maintained and stored can be just as important as the number on the dashboard. In some cases, a well maintained car with higher mileage could be the smarter buy.
Why low mileage is attractive
There are good reasons buyers pay attention to mileage.
A vehicle that has travelled fewer kilometres may have experienced less wear on components such as the engine, transmission, suspension and interior. Lower mileage can also make a vehicle more appealing when it comes time to sell.
But low mileage should not automatically be treated as a sign that a car is in better condition.
A higher mileage car can still be a great buy
Consider two cars of the same age.
One has travelled 60,000 km, mostly through short trips around town. The other has travelled 120,000 km, with much of that distance spent cruising on the open road.
Which one is better?
There is no simple answer.
Frequent short journeys can mean more cold starts, stop and start driving, braking and time spent in traffic. Longer motorway or open road journeys can add kilometres quickly while placing different demands on the vehicle.
That is why the type of driving matters, not just the total distance travelled.
Maintenance history can matter more than mileage
A well maintained vehicle with 120,000 km could be a better purchase than a neglected vehicle with 70,000 km.
When comparing used cars, look for evidence of regular servicing and maintenance. Check whether recommended services have been completed and whether important items have been repaired or replaced when required.
A good service history can give you a much clearer picture of how a vehicle has been cared for throughout its life.
Very low mileage deserves a closer look too
Seeing unusually low mileage on an older car might look like a bargain, but it is worth asking why the vehicle has travelled so little.
Cars are designed to be driven. Long periods without regular use can contribute to issues with batteries, tyres, brakes, seals and other components.
Low mileage is not necessarily a warning sign. It simply should not replace a proper inspection and a few sensible questions about the vehicle’s history.
Think about age and mileage together
Mileage makes more sense when you consider it alongside the age of the vehicle.
A relatively new car with very high mileage may have been used extensively for commuting or business. An older vehicle with extremely low mileage may have spent long periods parked or in storage.
Neither situation automatically makes the car good or bad.
Instead of asking whether the mileage is high or low, ask whether it makes sense for the vehicle’s age, condition and history.
What should you check before buying?
Before deciding on a used vehicle, consider the complete picture.
Look at the vehicle’s service history, overall condition, previous ownership and how it has been used. Check the tyres, brakes, interior and exterior for signs of wear, and make sure the mileage appears consistent with the condition of the vehicle.
A pre purchase inspection from a qualified professional can also help identify issues that may not be obvious during a test drive.
So, is low mileage always better?
Not necessarily.
Low mileage can be a positive factor, but it should never be the only reason you choose one used car over another.
A higher mileage vehicle with a strong service history and careful previous ownership may offer better value than a lower mileage vehicle that has not been properly maintained.
When buying used, look beyond the odometer. The best car is not always the one with the fewest kilometres. It is the one with the condition, history and value that make sense for you.
