BMW New Zealand has announced that it will expand its local electrified offering with the new X1 xDrive25e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) later this year.

It’ll slot between the two X1 variants currently in showrooms, priced at $86,900, with customer deliveries expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre twin-turbocharged inline three-cylinder petrol engine sending power to the front wheels, while an electric motor works in tandem at the rear to develop a combined output of 180kW and 477Nm of torque. The e-motor can provide an additional 40kW boost when needed, such as during hard acceleration or overtaking.

Fuel consumption comes to 1.0 litre per 100km, with petrol being drawn from a 47 litre tank that has been enlarged for the xDrive25e.

With this being a PHEV, it of course features its own onboard lithium-ion battery with a usable energy content of 14.2kWh, providing enough juice to travel 89km in fully electric mode. Once drained, it can be recharged from 0 to 100 per cent in 2.5 hours.

As for specification, the X1 xDrive25e matches that of the X1 sDrive18i, meaning it gets 18-inch alloy wheels, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, remote software update capability, and more as standard.

Two upgrade packages are on offer at an additional cost, including the Innovations Package which adds an alarm system, Panorama sunroof, Harmon/Kardon sound system, electric and heated seats, as well as a heated steering wheel for $6500.

Also up for your choosing is the M Sport package, adding 18-inch M Sport alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, darker interior trim, a leather steering wheel, exterior shadow line trim, and high gloss roof racks for $2500.

Customers can option their X1 in non-metallic Alpine White at no extra cost, choose from seven metallic finishes for an additional $1690, or one BMW Individual colour for $2500.
