Dodge Charger tipped to get Hellcat V8 again in 2028

The Dodge Charger could be getting its supercharged Hemi V8 back for the 2028 model year, with a new report pointing to Hellcat power for both two-door and four-door versions.
According to Car and Driver, an internal Stellantis document obtained by MoparInsiders lists the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 among the planned Charger powertrains. It pairs the engine with a ZF 8HP95 eight-speed automatic transmission.

The reported V8 models would use rear-wheel drive, marking a departure from the standard all-wheel-drive layout of today’s Hurricane-powered Chargers. MoparInsiders says packaging constraints are behind that decision, with insufficient space to accommodate both the supercharged engine and the additional AWD hardware.
Current petrol Chargers use a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six, producing 313kW in the R/T and 410kW in the Scat Pack. Both have all-wheel drive with a selectable rear-wheel-drive mode.
The reported 2028 powertrain listing retains those six-cylinder options, includes the 447kW Hurricane-powered Super Bee, and continues to include the electric Charger Daytona. The V8 would therefore broaden the range of powertrains.
Its output remains the big unanswered question. Car and Driver suggests Dodge could return to the previous Hellcat’s approximately 535kW tune, or adopt the updated 579kW version of the supercharged 6.2-litre engine used in the 2027 Ram 1500 SRT TRX.
