Old-school security: Toyota launches branded steering lock in Oz to fight thefts

Words: Kyle Cassidy

In a move that feels more 1996 than 2026, Toyota has turned to “retro” tech to protect its most popular models from high-tech thieves.

Toyota Australia has officially released a genuine steering wheel club lock, a visual and physical deterrent aimed at protecting high-target models like the HiLux, LandCruiser, and RAV4. While new 2025 and 2026 models have received factory-level security patches, this “genuine accessory” is Toyota’s answer for the thousands of existing owners currently in the crosshairs of a regional vehicle theft epidemic.

Why the “Club” is Making a Comeback

Modern car thieves have moved beyond “hot-wiring.” Criminals are now using devices to hack into a vehicle’s Controller Area Network (CAN bus) to bypass immobilisers and start engines in seconds.

While Toyota’s newest 2026 fleet in Australia features upgraded encryption to block these digital attacks, those hardware fixes can’t easily be retrofitted to older models. Enter the steering wheel lock: a low-tech solution to a high-tech problem.

“The bright red body improves visibility and serves as a clear deterrent,” Toyota says, acknowledging that sometimes the best way to stop a hacker is with a solid piece of automotive-grade steel.

The Toyota-branded lock is currently retailing for $200 AUD (approx. $220 NZD) at selected dealerships, making it a premium solution.

It is not something offered by Toyota NZ.

For comparison, non-branded locks at retailers like Repco or Supercheap Auto typically range from $30 to $160, making the Toyota version a “top-shelf” choice for the brand loyalist.

Beyond the Lock: Toyota’s Anti-Theft Stance

This release is part of a broader “hit-back” strategy. Toyota Australia has recently implemented a prioritisation system to help victims of vehicle theft get into replacement cars faster. They are also lobbying for stricter regulations in Oz on “CAN bus injection” devices, the hacking tools often sold legally online as “diagnostic equipment.”
