The “Apex Predator” is officially off the endangered species list.
While Ram had already confirmed the return of the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 to the standard 1500 lineup, the brand has today dropped the hammer by revealing the return of the flagship TRX for the 2027 model year.
And it hasn’t just returned; it has evolved. The “resurrected” super-truck claims the title of the most powerful production gas pick-up in the world.
Will it come to New Zealand?
Naturally, the first question on every Kiwi petrolhead’s lips is whether this beast will make it down under to join the locally remanufactured lineup. While nothing is signed in blood just yet, the local boss is clearly keen.
“We are super-excited about the new Ram SRT TRX,” says Todd Groves, General Manager of Ram Trucks New Zealand.
“The first-generation Ram TRX was a popular addition to our line-up when it was previously available. Although the new Ram SRT TRX is not yet confirmed for our market, it is under serious consideration and would make a great addition to the already available range here in New Zealand.”
Given the success of the previous TRX here—and the Kiwi appetite for high-performance utes—”serious consideration” is a promising sign.
777 Horsepower: The New Benchmark
Ram’s SRT engineers haven’t just dusted off the old blueprint. The legendary 6.2-litre supercharged HEMI V8 returns with updated hardware and engine management, finding an extra 10 percent in horsepower.
The new TRX produces a staggering 580kW (777hp) and 922Nm (680 lb-ft) of torque.
That is enough to propel the half-ton truck from 0–96km/h (0-60mph) in just 3.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 190km/h.
“Ram set the bar five years ago with 702 horsepower, and that benchmark has been challenged,” said Tim Kuniskis, Ram Brand CEO. “SRT doesn’t limbo; we high-jump… 777 horsepower? That’s the mark.”
Tech meets Muscle
While the engine is old-school muscle, the rest of the truck has been brought into the future. The TRX adopts the new “Atlantis” electrical architecture found in the facelifted Ram 1500 range.
This means it gets a massive 14.5-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a heads-up display. In a first for a high-performance off-roader, it also features Hands-Free Active Drive Assist (Level 2+), meaning the truck can handle the boring highway driving while you save your energy for the dunes.
Underneath, it rides on second-generation Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive shocks with a massive 14 inches of rear suspension travel.
The “Bloodshot” Edition
To celebrate the relaunch, Ram is offering a “Bloodshot Night Edition.” This features a two-tone paint job with a black roof and a bold “Flame Red” hood stripe, along with carbon fibre interior trim and red detailing throughout the cabin.
In the US, the new TRX is set to arrive in the second half of 2026. If it does get the green light for New Zealand, local conversion timelines would likely see it arriving sometime after that.
