Renault previews what’s to come with hydrogen-powered concept

Words: Zane Shackleton

Renault has given us a glimpse into their future with a teaser shot of an upcoming hydrogen-powered car.

The French marque was exceptionally coy on what we actually have in front of us. Instead, the only detail they shared was this car would have a hydrogen engine.

‘Engine’ suggests this unnamed teaser will have a traditional internal combustion motor that runs off of hydrogen power. It’s a sidestep from electrification, but many manufacturers are keen to further examine hydrogen as a future crude oil substitute.

The dimly-lit preview hints we can expect a larger version of Renault’s upcoming all-electric Megane. It’s more than likely going to be a crossover of some degree.

There are some slightly larger daytime running lights compared to the Megane, and it appears Renault have done away with side mirrors in favour of cameras. Of course, this is merely a concept, and not everything we see now gets reflected in what rolls off the production line.

Renault believes a hydrogen-powered car will continue to “translate their sustainable development commitments.” The car will also use recycled materials. Because, you know, one man’s trash is another car manufacturer’s treasure.

The best news for us is a hydrogen-fuelled engine sounds basically the same as a standard petrol engine.

Renault is at the beginning of its new revolution. Earlier this year, they announced a joint venture with Nissan and Mitsubishi. The three carmakers plan to triple their investment to jointly develop electric vehicles.

The final concept of Renault’s hydro-mobile will be revealed in May.
