– Electronics giant follows Sony into the EV space with home-integrated LDK+ concept
Japanese tech company Sharp is set to enter the electric vehicle market, unveiling plans for its first EV; a compact electric people mover previewed by the LDK+ concept, which will debut at this week’s 2025 Tokyo Motor Show.
The LDK+ marks Sharp’s transition from consumer electronics and whiteware into mobility, following a similar path to fellow Japanese brand Sony. Designed around the theme “Part of your home”, Sharp envisions the vehicle as both transport and a living space. When parked, the LDK+ can double as a study or mini home theatre, blurring the line between car and home appliance.
Inside, the cabin features rotating front seats, a central table with an integrated projector, and a retractable display for streaming movies or video calls. The vehicle also integrates Sharp’s AI and IoT technology, enabling it to communicate with smart home systems, solar panels, and home batteries.
While drivetrain and battery details remain under wraps, the LDK+ rides on Foxconn’s Model A platform, the same manufacturing partner responsible for Apple’s iPhones. Foxconn has recently expanded into EV production, developing a range of modular architectures for brands like Mitsubishi, which will use the Model B for its next electric vehicle.
Sharp plans to launch the production version of the LDK+ during the 2027 financial year (April 2027–March 2028) and aims to sell around 9000 units annually in Japan. Rather than building a traditional dealer network, the company is exploring alternative retail channels, potentially leveraging its existing electronics sales infrastructure.
The LDK+ suggests Sharp’s bold vision for the future: an EV that’s as much a home extension as a vehicle, merging the brand’s tech expertise with a new approach to mobility.
