Tesla Model 3 gets huge price cut in New Zealand

Words: Matthew Hansen

For the second time this year, Tesla has announced big price cuts to New Zealand’s most popular new electric car — the Model 3.

Back in April, the firm slashed 3 prices across the board; from $74,900 to $69,900 for the Standard Range Plus, from $94,900 to $87,900 for the Long Range, and from $101,900 to $100,900 for the flagship Performance.

Now, it’s cut another hefty chunk of change from each model’s local retail. The entry level Standard Range is now $66,900, the Long Range $82,900, and the Performance $95,900. Note that none of these prices include on-road costs, which add just under $2,000 to each car’s tally.

The move doesn’t change anything with regards to how many Tesla models are eligible for the government’s Clean Car Discount. The Model 3 Standard Range is still the only variant that slides under the $80,000.

With the $8,625 discount, a Model 3 Standard Range can now be had for $58,275 plus on-road costs. It’s amazing to think that the same car cost almost $80,000 this time last year.

Model 3 prices in Australia have also been through a similar process, with similar discounts confirmed over the weekend over the ditch.

It’s suspected that most of the discount is to do with Australasia’s new Model 3 supplier. Our Standard Range and Long Range models now all come from Tesla’s new GigaFactory in China.

On top of Model 3 pricing, Tesla has also tweaked pricing for the Model S line-up. New Zealand was previously destined to get both the Plaid and Plaid+ performance variants. Tesla has since cancelled the Plaid+, which has seen them increase retail pricing for the Plaid.

The 322km/h sports sedan, which can accelerate to 100km/h in just 2.1 seconds, has had it’s priced adjusted from $209,990 to $224,990. The entry level Long Range Model S is unchanged, priced from $159,990.
