Toyota teases mystery model
Words: Kyle Cassidy
Toyota has set the rumour mill spinning today after dropping a cryptic teaser image on social media, hinting that a new addition to their lineup is imminent.
The shadowy image doesn’t give much away, but the silhouette has immediately sparked debate among motoring enthusiasts. At first glance, the crop looks suspiciously like the rear tailgate of a pick up.
While Toyota has remained tight-lipped regarding a reveal date or official details, the shape of the vehicle has led to strong speculation that we could be looking at a new compact pick up, a potential rival to the likes of the Ford Maverick, which has seen massive success in the US.

The case for a compact
The strongest theory currently circulating is that this vehicle is the production version of a compact ute, possibly reviving the classic “Stout” nameplate.
Eagle-eyed observers have noted that the sides of the vehicle in the teaser angle inward as they reach the beltline. This design trait is less common on traditional body-on-frame trucks like the Tacoma or Hilux, which tend to have vertical sides to maximise tray space. Instead, the tapered look suggests a unibody construction, similar to the EPU concept Toyota unveiled in 2023.
The EPU concept was a fully electric, dual-cab ute that measured about 5 metres long. While the concept was an EV, industry whispers suggest a production version would likely launch with a hybrid internal-combustion powertrain to match current market demand.

Filling the gap
For years, rumours have swirled that Toyota is planning to re-enter the compact utility segment in the US. Toyota executives in North America have previously hinted that such a project has been green-lit, with timing being the only variable.
