Golf GTI 50 in green on the track

Volkswagen Golf GTI EDITION 50 sets Nürburgring front-wheel drive record

Words: Kyle Cassidy

Volkswagen has marked 50 years of the GTI badge with its fastest and most powerful production Golf GTI yet. And it’s pretty handy with the GTI EDITION 50 setting a new front-wheel drive production car lap record at Germany’s  Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Driven by Volkswagen development and test driver Benjamin Leuchter, the anniversary model completed the 20.8km circuit in 7min 44.523sec, making it the quickest front-wheel drive production vehicle to lap the legendary track. But only just, pipping the Honda Type-R’s time by a scant 0.358 seconds.

The record also means the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is now the fastest production Volkswagen ever around the Nordschleife.

Power comes from a turbocharged petrol engine producing 239kW. Volkswagen says the hot hatch can sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 270km/h.

The special-edition model has been engineered with a sharper chassis setup than the standard Golf GTI, featuring a MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear arrangement. Ride height has been lowered by 15mm compared with a regular Golf, while adaptive DCC suspension is fitted as standard.

For the Nürburgring run, the car was equipped with Volkswagen’s optional GTI Performance package, which lowers the suspension by an additional 5mm and adds lightweight 19-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres.

The package also includes a lightweight titanium R-Performance exhaust system designed to reduce weight and improve response on track.

Leuchter said the latest GTI impressed with both its pace and composure over the challenging Nürburgring layout.

“The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is more than just an anniversary model,” he said. “It shows what performance in the compact segment can feel like when technical expertise, passion and 50 years of GTI history come together.”

The GTI EDITION 50 has been confirmed for the New Zealand market, although in ‘strictly limited numbers’ according to the local website.
