Bentley unveils Bentayga X concept with serious off-road chops

Words: Andrew Sluys

Bentley has unveiled an off-road concept version of its Bentayga SUV at the FAT Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria.

According to Bentley, this concept was built to “stimulate and gain feedback for an enhanced off-road capable Bentayga.”

Dubbed the Bentayga X, it’s based on the Bentayga Speed, which is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 producing 477kW and 6850Nm.

It adds a 2-inch suspension lift, and gets a wheel track which is widened by 4.7-inches.

Larger fenders allow for bigger all-terrain tyres to fit around the huge 22-inch wheels, although going to a smaller wheel might have been more beneficial.

The large roof rack gets a set of spotlights mounted to it, and holds an electric go-kart for reasons unclear to us.

The roof rack also raises the total height of the Bentayga to a hefty 2.5-metres, meaning most garages in Monaco will be off limits.

Despite the suspension lift, Bentley has managed to retain the stock air suspension system in the Bentayga, as well as the anti-roll componentry.

As mentioned by the British brand, this concept is exploring the idea of putting an off-road Bentayga into production.

While it sounds like a strange idea for an SUV based on luxury living, Mercedes’ G-Wagen and the Land Rover Defender are both doing well in this segment.

And it’s unlikely Rolls-Royce would ever give it a proper crack with the Cullinan, so Bentley could have a monopoly.
