Ford has revealed a set of sketches which show an electric ute that looks to be similar sized to a Ranger.
According to the American brand, it is using aerodynamic techniques taken from Formula 1 to improve this ute’s efficiency.
With this in mind, it makes sense that it has adopted more of a teardrop style body than Ford’s previous pick-ups.
Though the air flow graphics make the vehicle look somewhat coupe SUV-like, if you look closely, you can still see the cabin’s roof ending.
Ford claims these aerodynamic gains will add around 15 per cent more driving range to the vehicle, which should translate to around 80km.
“To bring our new mid-size electric [ute] to life, we didn’t just look to the automotive industry for inspiration – we looked to the racetrack,” said Saleem Mert, senior manager of Advanced EV Aerodynamics at Ford.
“By adapting a Formula 1-inspired development cycle, we shifted our focus toward a ‘fail fast, learn faster’ mentality.”
Ford also claims that it is trying to keep the price as close to what a Model T would have cost when adjusted for modern inflation.
When put through an inflation calculator, this lands in the $100,000 region, so don’t go expecting to see this electric ute do any serious undercutting.
It is set to join Ford’s line-up in 2027, and no comments have been made as to whether or not it will be sold in New Zealand or Australian markets.
